NASA has made another breakthrough by launching a new mission to Mars which aims to explore more deeply the red planet. This mission, known as Mars Perseverance, when launched in late 2020, is expected to answer important questions about the possibility of life on Mars. Apart from that, Perseverance also brings various new technologies that can be useful for future missions, including human missions to Mars. One of the main goals of this mission is to collect samples of Martian soil and rocks that will then be sent back to Earth in future missions. Perseverance is equipped with advanced scientific equipment, such as cameras and spectrometers, that enable geological mapping as well as chemical analysis of the planet’s surface. Additionally, a camera called Mastcam-Z can take high-resolution images and allows long-duration video recording. This mission also brought innovation with the presence of a helicopter called Ingenuity, which was the first aircraft to be tested in the Martian atmosphere. Ingenuity is designed to carry out a series of short flights that could provide valuable information about flight techniques on Mars, as well as prospects for using the aircraft in future exploration missions. Perseverance landed in an area known as Jezero Crater, an area that is believed to have once been filled with water and had a river delta. Because Jezero Crater has a high potential for preserving traces of ancient microbial life, this area is a major focus of research. Through in-depth analysis of minerals and sediments, the team of scientists hopes to identify signs of life that may have existed billions of years ago. Over time, the mission team implemented AI technology to assist in automated decision making on Mars. Robotics and artificial intelligence are expected to speed up the process of data collection and analysis. Inspired by innovative data discoveries, NASA engages in international collaboration with other space agencies and universities to advance engineering and research. This ambitious Mars mission is expected to provide deeper insight not only into Mars, but also into the origins of life on other planets. In addition, the results of this research can strengthen our understanding of climate change and geology on Earth.
